The Society announces the publication of the long-awaited book containing a selection of articles from the first 8 volumes of The Sherlock Holmes Journal, covering the years 1952-68.

Edited by NICHOLAS UTECHIN and with a Foreword by ANTHONY HOWLETT – the final piece of Holmesian writing he produced before his death – The Best of ‘The Sherlock Holmes Journal’ is quite literally that . . . and more!   There will be familiar names to many therein and there will be Sherlockian authors who contributed mightily in the early days of the Society and the Journal, but are, perhaps, less well remembered today.

There is more than mere scholarship: there is Society news from the fifties and sixties, film reviews, editorials, obituaries: all contributing to a rounded picture of life in the Holmesian world of our Society and its publication 40 and 50 years ago.

This handsome hardback –  the FIRST EDITION – is strictly limited to 300 numbered copies (1-300).   Nos. 1-25 constitute ‘specials’: they will be numbered by hand and signed by FREDA HOWLETT (President and Founding member of the Society), NICHOLAS UTECHIN (Editor of this volume and of The Sherlock Holmes Journal) and PHILIP PORTER (outgoing Chairman of the Society).   They are thus more expensive and will be made available on a first-come first-serve basis.

This project has always been envisaged as an eventual 2-volume edition.   We sincerely hope that there will be a good enough take-up for this, the first volume, to justify bringing out No. 2 in the not-too-distant future.
