Description

Date of publication: 2004
Edited by Pam Bruxner and Bob Ellis
48 Pages

In early September 2004 members of the Society went on a jaunt to Sussex and this was the handbook which accompanied them on their travels. The trip was very similar to a visit made in the summer of 1993. There was a handbook for that excursion (long out of print) and this publication gives a second opportunity to enjoy much of the material in the original.

The lead article is one of Bernard Davies’ best pieces of topographical work, identifying sites associated with Lion and there is much interesting reading to be had in pieces by John Hall, Catherine Cooke, Roger Johnson, Ian Smyth and Pam Bruxner.

There are three new pieces : a reprint of James Montgomery’s classic 1955 identification of Groombridge Place as the original for Birlstone Manor in Vall, an article by Guy Marriott on Holmes’s bee-keeping endeavours and a piece of whimsy by Nick Utechin demonstrating that Big Bob Ferguson in Suss may not have been what he appeared.

Overseas members of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London have always needed to pay higher subscription rates than UK based members to cover the extra cost of postage and packaging for mailing the Sherlock Holmes Journal outside the UK. The Society is now changing the way it presents its membership prices so that the subscription is the same for UK and non-UK members, but the additional postage and packaging that are associated with overseas membership is now added on as a separate postage cost.

If you are looking to buy membership as a gift or multiple memberships, or if you experience difficulty with applying online, please contact the Membership Secretary: membership@sherlock-holmes.org.uk.
