“I do not know how the bank can thank you or repay you”

This is the heart of the historic City of London, well-known to Holmes and Watson.

On the left is the Bank of England – “the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street”, established in 1694. Facing us is the Royal Exchange, Britain’s first specialist commercial building, founded in the 16th century. Just out of frame on the right is the Mansion House, a magnificent Georgian palace, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London.

“Some little distance down Threadneedle Street, upon the left-hand side, there is, as you may have remarked, a small angle in the wall.” This, said Holmes, is where the Man With the Twisted Lip sat each day, “cross-legged with his tiny stock of matches on his lap” …
