Facing us is the Royal Exchange, Britain’s first specialist commercial building, founded in the 16th century. Just out of frame on the right is the Mansion House, a magnificent Georgian palace, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London.
“Some little distance down Threadneedle Street, upon the left-hand side, there is, as you may have remarked, a small angle in the wall.” This, said Holmes, is where the Man With the Twisted Lip sat each day, “cross-legged with his tiny stock of matches on his lap” …
