Walking the South Downs with Sherlock Holmes

May 6, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In 1903 , the greatest fictional detective ever retired to East Dean on the South Downs to be a beekeeper. Arthur Conan Doyle lived near here and used the area as inspiration for one of Holmes' last adventures .
Join a walk to see the house he (probably) retired to and take a walk along the cliffs while listening to the case of "The Lion's Mane" , which is played out along this rocky coast.
This will be a three mile walk up and down these spectacular cliffs, with a trip to the pub at the end of it, so be prepared for walking, drinking and enjoying the sunshine.

You may dispute the claim of East Dean to be the location of Holmes's retirement cottage – the account in "The Lion's Mane" suggests somewhere much more isolated – but the blue plaque on that attractive old house is a rather charming touch. It was installed without any aggressive publicity and with no intention of turning the house into a tourist trap.
It's rather short notice, but the area is well worth a visit in any case, and a walk along the South Downs sounds delightful!
The charge is £5.00 a head for adults. Children go free.
