November 9, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Film Evening

The Society’s 2023 Film Evening will be held on Thursday 9 November at the National Liberal Club at 1, Whitehall Place, London, SW1A 2HE, at 6.00pm for 7.15pm.  The Club is located on the corner of Whitehall Place and the Victoria Embankment, not far from Embankment Underground Station and Charing Cross main line station.

Members and their guests may opt to attend the film presentation only at £12.00 per head or to join us for buffet refreshments from 6.15pm at a cost of £38.00 per head.  We will start the film presentation at 7.15pm.

For those who choose to dine, we will have a selection of finger food. The Club requires catering numbers and dietary information at least 15 days before the meeting date, so if you wish to dine before the meeting please book early and certainly before the 25 October.  If you prefer vegetarian or other nonstandard options please make this clear on your booking form.  Drinks must be paid for on the night.

A cash bar will be open in The Lounge on the ground floor of the Club from 6.00pm, serving bottled beers, wine and soft drinks.  The buffet will be served in The Lounge, on the ground floor from 6.15pm to be followed by the films at 7.15pm.  After the meeting, members may use the National Liberal Club bar.

Our host for the evening is Matthew J. Elliott.  Matthew is not only a member of the Society but also the writer of the long-running American radio series, The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

This year’s film evening is entitled ‘Big in Japan’ as both items he will show are Japanese subtitled depictions of the world’s greatest detective in the modern world. In Sachiko’s Moustache, an episode of the 2018 Japanese series Miss Sherlock, a minor act of vandalism leads to a murder investigation and a startling discovery.  As to the second item, we received this exciting email from Matthew “…after a whole year of trying, I’ve tracked down subtitles for a Japanese Hound of the Baskervilles.”  Which gives you an idea of the efforts he goes to on our behalf.  The Hound of the Baskervilles is a 2022 continuation of the show Sherlock: Untold Stories, The first episode was very well received at the last film evening. We expect you will not need to be told what this one is about!

Dress is smart casual and gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket and tie.  Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members.  They should also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.  If an acknowledgement is required, please provide an e-mail address or a stamped, addressed envelope with your application.

Applications should be sent to arrive not later than 2 November (or if dining before 25 October).
