ADVISING GOVERNMENT: FICTION AND FACT IN UNITED KINGDOM HISTORY

“Stand back! Stand right back!” said he with the sharp imperiousness which I had associated only with moments of crisis.  “…it is horribly contagious.  Keep your distance and all is well.”

The 2020 Richard Lancelyn Green Lecture will be held on Thursday 15th October 2020.  The meeting will be open from 6.45pm to allow everyone to get connected in good time.

We are particularly honoured this year to have as our speaker Dr. Andrew Blick.  Dr. Blick is Reader in Politics and Contemporary History and Head of Department of Political Economy, King’s College London.  He is the author of numerous books, essays and pamphlets on the UK constitution, including histories of special advisers to ministers and of aides to prime ministers.

In this lecture, Andrew Blick will place the role of Mycroft Holmes as government adviser in the context of the actual UK history, relating it to the development of the Civil Service from ancient times up to the present.  He will consider the changes taking place in the second half of the nineteenth century, which led to the emergence of the permanent Civil Service as we understand it today.  He will discuss the real life equivalents to outside experts brought in to provide additional support, who are in many ways the ancestors of the special advisers of today.  He will also discuss artistic representations of civil servants and other advisers, as presented by authors such as Conan Doyle, Dickens and Trollope, and more recent depictions including Yes Minister and In The Thick of It.

There will be no charge for attending this meeting.   Please supply your own favourite tipple.

Booking form below – we look forward to seeing everyone on the night.

We hope people will feel able to use their cameras, but if you prefer not to appear on screen, that’s fine.  Do remember that if you are not able to use Zoom, the Richard Lancelyn Green Lecture will have the option to dial in using a telephone.
