May Meeting and AGM 2024

May 23 @ 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm

The Society’s May meeting and Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 23 May 2024 at the Wellington Hotel by Blue Orchid, 71 Vincent Square, Westminster, London, SW1P 2PA, United Kingdom.  The hotel is located at the Rochester Row end of Vincent Square.  The closest tube stations are Victoria, Pimlico and St James’s Park.  The Wellington Hotel is a new venue for the Society.  It was built as a hostel for King’s College Theology Department in 1913. The left wing was added in 1928-9 including a small Neo-Byzantine chapel and at the rear (the meeting room we will be using) a dining room with a mullioned and transomed window.  It is next door to the former Rochester Row Police Station, built in 1901 at 63 Rochester Row.  Holmes, Watson and Mary Morstan’s cab travelled along Rochester Row and Vincent Square in The Sign of Four, though that would have been before either of these buildings were built.  We will be using the hotel bar and lounge for pre-prandial drinks, and then the dining hall for the meal and meeting.

The meeting will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting.

Members and their guests may opt to attend the AGM only, for which there is no charge.  Or the AGM and the meeting for £15, or also to dine beforehand at a cost of £40 per head.  The meeting and dining charge includes VAT and service but not drinks, which must be paid for on the night.

For those who choose to dine, the meal will comprise two courses: a main course of Pan Fried Chicken Breast Marinated with herbs and served in a creamy beetroot sauce Mediterranean vegetables and roasted potatoes followed by a Fresh Fruit Salad. If you wish for the vegetarian alternative or have other dietary requirements, please advise your requirements when booking.

Dinner will be served promptly at 6.45pm and will be followed by the meetings from around 8pm.

The meeting will commence with the Society’s AGM.  After the formal business of the evening we will present:

Disjecta Membra

Our American member David Houle is making a return visit to show us some more of his extensive and intriguing collection.  Invested in the Baker Street Irregulars as The British Museum, we are delighted to welcome him back to London to share his discoveries and insights with us.

The focus of David’s presentation this year is Sherlock Holmes himself.  Have you ever wondered who Holmes’ family were or how they shaped him into the man we know?  By applying the Master’s methods, that “mixture of imagination and reality”, he allows a variety of Canonical artifacts from his collection to tell their stories, and in so doing, reveal the secrets of a family’s past.  New insights into and interpretations of the early life of Sherlock Holmes will capture the imagination in ways both unexpected and compelling.  Come for a unique opportunity to see the daguerreotypes of Sherlock and Mycroft, and other members of their family, and learn the significance of the delicately-carved ivory figurine of a woman.

As this is a new venue, it would be helpful if they could have numbers for dining as early as possible, and certainly no later than 16 May.  Applications for the meetings only should be made no later than 19 May.

Ideally, please book via the website but a manual booking form is also enclosed.  Please book even if you wish just to attend the AGM, as we will need to know numbers for the venue.  Those not paying for the meeting will be requested to leave after the AGM.

Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members.  Please also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.  If an acknowledgement is required, please provide an e-mail address or a stamped, addressed envelope with your application.

The Society likes to keep a record of its activities, including photographs of our meetings which are published in the Journal and on the Society’s website.  If you do not want to appear in a Society photograph please avoid being in any posed photographs and advise one of the meeting organisers.
