Designing Sherlock Holmes games

May 25 @ 11:30 am - 3:00 pm

Sherlock Holmes - Consulting Detective

The game is afoot

Come and join us for a really interesting and unusual meeting in a really interesting and unusual venue.  From 11:30 in The Spying Room at The Morpeth Arms, 58 Millbank, Westminster London, SW1P 4RW.

The Morpeth Arms, a beautiful 19th Century, Grade II listed pub has river views, a traditional feel, bags of history and haunted cellars. It is located on the North Bank of the River Thames between Vauxhall bridge & Tate Britain, or put another way, it is close to and equidistant from MI5 and MI6, and the clandestine activities of Mr Philby and others account for the name of the upstairs room where we are meeting. Westminster, Vauxhall, and Pimlico tube stations are only a short walk away.

Our timetable is: from 11.30 coffee/tea; 12.00 our speaker’s talk; 1pm buffet lunch and after lunch an opportunity to continue the meeting.  Please note the bar takes credit cards/no cash.

Charge: £20 per head including buffet.

Our speaker is Dave Neale.  He is a man of many parts; one might say a formidable man—a man who might play a deep game.

Dave is a game designer specialising in narrative and mystery games, or ‘interactive fiction’. His games have sold over 1 million copies worldwide and been translated into many different languages. Most notable amongst his games, so far as an audience of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts is concerned, are: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Baker Street Irregulars; The Animals of Baker Street, and two Sherlock Holmes scenarios for the play-at-home escape room series Unlock!

He also has a past as an academic, and remains an Affiliate of the Centre for Play, Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) at the University of Cambridge, where he teaches the psychology of play. He has worked with the LEGO Foundation, the U.K. Parliament, and the United States Military Operations Research Society.  He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

You might think The game’s up or Surely the game is hardly worth the candle but come and see.  Dave’s talk will be followed by a questions session and after lunch there will be a game demonstration.
