Annual Film Evening: “One Detective, Two Lands” (15th November)

The Society’s 2022 Film Evening will be held on Tuesday the 15th November at the National Liberal Club,  1 Whitehall Place, London SW1A 2HE, at 6.15pm for 7.15pm.

It will be a pleasure to see our host Matthew J. Elliott return in person.  Matthew is not only a member of the Society but also the principal writer of the long-running American radio series, The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He will present an evening entitled “One Detective, Two Lands”.

The first item on the programme is the 1935 film The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, starring Arthur Wontner. To date, all versions available on DVD have been of poor quality, and almost impossible to sit through, but Matthew is proud to present a beautifully-restored version of this adaptation of The Valley of Fear

This is followed by a very different interpretation of the Master Detective, a feature-length episode of the 2019 series Sherlock: Untold Stories, starring Dean Fujioka. Set in present-day Japan, this subtitled drama presents a thoroughly ingenious depiction of one of the cases mentioned in passing by Watson in The Six Napoleons

With a gap of 84 years between them, these productions both display the enduring appeal of Conan Doyle’s creation around the world.

Book Now

The National Liberal Club is located on the corner of Whitehall Place and the Victoria Embankment, not far from Embankment Underground Station and also conveniently placed for Charing Cross main line station.

Members and their guests may opt to attend the film presentation only at £12.00/US$15 per head or to join us for buffet refreshments from 6.15pm at a cost of £38.00/US$47 per head.  We will start the film presentation at 7.15pm.

For those who choose to dine we will have a selection of finger food, both hot and cold.  The choice of food options will be influenced by the dietary choices of those who book to dine, so if you prefer vegetarian or other nonstandard options, please make this clear on your booking form.  Silence will be taken as omnivorous. For those with previous unsatisfactory experiences of buffet arrangements please be reassured that the Club has advised they will replenish on a regular basis to keep the food fresh and hot.  The meeting and dining charge includes VAT and service but not drinks, which must be paid for on the night.

A cash bar will be open in the Smoking Room on the first floor of the building from 6.00pm.  After the meeting, members may use the National Liberal Club bar.  The buffet will be served in the David Lloyd George Room, also on the first floor from 6.15pm to be followed by the films at 7.15pm.

Dress is smart casual and gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket and tie.  Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members.  They should also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.  If an acknowledgement is required, please provide an e-mail address or a stamped, addressed envelope with your application.

The Society likes to keep a record of its activities, including photographs of our meetings which are published in the Journal and on the Society’s website/Facebook page.  If you do not want to appear in a Society photograph please avoid being in any posed photographs and advise one of the meeting organisers.
