The Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Surrey & Hampshire Weekend

The Crooked House and The Solitary Cyclist

Our Society expedition this year will take place from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th September, based at the University of Surrey, Guildford. Please complete the booking form and return it with your payment by 1st August 2010 to secure your place.

We will be visiting the landscapes and buildings associated with two Sherlock Holmes tales: the area of Farnham to follow the tyre tracks of Miss Violet Smith in The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist, and to the military town of Aldershot to identify the home of Colonel James Barclay in The Crooked Man.

As well as a range of expert speakers our weekend highlights will include a guided visit to the fascinating arts noveau Watts Mausoleum with lunch, a visit to Aldershot’s Military Museum, a Gala Dinner, a guided visit to Guildford’s workhouse (much of which is in original Victorian condition) and lunch at Brooklands, with an opportunity to see the Raleigh bicycle collection amongst other transport bygones and – we hope – to witness a Penny-farthing cycle race.

We have made every effort to keep the costs of the weekend as low as possible while maintaining the quality and comforts our members expect. The cost of the weekend is £240 for residential, inclusive of accommodation and all meals, luxury coach and admissions, or £155 non-residential with all group arrangements save accommodation and breakfast. Alcoholic drinks are not included in the weekend price.

Travel will be by luxury motor coach. Members are very welcome to bring guests. All rooms at Surrey University have been recently refurbished and are en suite single rooms. There are no twins or doubles. While much of the University campus is on a slope approaching Guildford Cathedral we have booked facilities on the level part of the site. There are a limited number of steps to the facilities we will be using during our weekend and these should not present a problem to anyone with moderate walking capacity. While a lift is available to help, some steps must be managed. Members attending will need to be able to make their own way about the site, with five or so minutes walk from our accommodation to the dining areas and meeting rooms.

As there will be a crowded itinerary we must ask that all members take personal responsibility for ensuring that they are able to reach the coach pick up point as required by the expedition timetable. Members are asked to ensure that they arrange for a companion to be on hand to assist where this is required.
