Wine Tasting

March 31, 2015

“SOMETHING A LITTLE CHOICE”

The Society’s March Meeting will be held on Tuesday 31st March 2015 at The National Liberal Club at 1, Whitehall Place, London, SW1, at 7.00pm – please note the time.  The National Liberal Club is located on the corner of Whitehall Place and the Victoria Embankment, not far from Embankment Underground Station and Charing Cross main line station.  It is usually possible to find a nearby parking space at this time – though you may have to pay the congestion charge.  http://www.savageclub.com/

The format of the evening is rather different from our usual.  As we will be having a wine tasting, there will be no meal and no cash bar beforehand.  The wine tasting will start shortly after 7pm in the Lloyd George Room, where we usually meet.  Water and bread will be provided for palate cleansing, but please make your own arrangements to dine before or afterwards, as you prefer.

This unusual wine tasting will demonstrate the type of wines that would have been enjoyed by Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Although members will be aware of the wines mentioned in the Canon, we will explore the wines that might have been served at a large formal dinner in the 1890s in the UK, a fitting follow-up to our recent Langham Hotel and Annual Dinners. As someone remarked, "It always takes ages for the wine to arrive!"  Although many other countries would have been producing wines at the time, an English gentleman’s tastes rarely ran beyond France and Germany, Sherry and Port. The food would have been served in about six courses or removes, each accompanied by one or two wines. Toasts and speeches would have been made along with the Port. Such an event is, of course, the kind of thing that Sherlock Holmes himself would disdain, even if he was the guest of honour.

The proposed wine list (subject to availability) is:

  • NV J L Vergnon Eloquence Extra Grand Cru Brut Champagne
  • 2013 Château Roquefort Roquefortissime Bordeaux Blanc
  • 2012 Bachelet Chassagne-Montrachet Bourgogne Blanc
  • 2011 Donhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett Nahe
  • 2010 Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage Rhône Rouge
  • 2009 Domaine de Beliene Nuits St George Bourgogne Rouge
  • 2010 Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage Rhône Rouge
  • 2009 Château l’Enclos Pomerol Bordeaux Rouge
  • NV Lustau Empressa Eugenia Oloroso Sherry
  • 2002 Taylors Quinta da Vargellas Vintage Port

The event will be presented by D.r Wang Chong, the current and three-time Pol Roger Wine Challenge Cup champion, whom many of you will already know, and his friend, Ian McLaren, Chairman of the Central London Wine Society.  Ian was the top student in the 1988 Wine and Spirit Education Trust exams and has been holding wine tastings since 1980.

There will also be a quiz based loosely on the Canon. At the end, we shall use a simple scoring system to work out our favourite wines of the evening.

Members and their guests may attend the meeting at £32.00.  We anticipate that the meeting will finish around 9.45pm, though many members stay on to chat.

Applications should be sent to arrive not later than Friday 20th March.

Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members.  They should also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.  If an acknowledgement is required, please provide an e-mail address or a stamped, addressed envelope with your application.  Dress is smart casual and gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket and tie.  As in most London clubs, tee-shirts and trainers are not acceptable.  This is not our rule and we must comply with the club’s.
