Art in the Blood – the Vernets at the Wallace Collection
Members have the opportunity to go on a guided tour at the Wallace Collection, which houses one of the world’s most famous collections of fine and decorative arts and owns a superb selection of French 18th and 19th century painting. Most importantly for Sherlockians, it holds an impressive number of paintings by the French artist Horace Vernet, who was, of course, the brother of Sherlock Holmes' grandmother. Mr. Andrew Shingleton, an enthusiast of the Wallace Collection for many years, will be our guide. The Vernet collection will be the main feature of Andrew's tour. Our member, Marcus Geisser, will occasionally inject some remarkable revelations of his recent comparative study "Holmes and Vernet – Travel in the blood".
Members are asked to be at the entrance of the Wallace Collection (inside if it rains, outside if the sun shines) by 2.50 pm. The tour starts at 3.00 pm sharp and will last about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The price per person is £9.00. Please note that the tour can only accommodate 25 persons.
