The Victorian Cricket Match
June 18, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 6:00 pm
Cricket v P G Wodehouse Society 2017
Do please come and give our players your support.
Once again the Society is delighted to accept the challenge from our great rivals and friends:
The Gold Bats of the P G Wodehouse Society.
The match will start at 11.30am and your support is most welcome. The match is an ideal opportunity to meet friends, old and new, in a delightful setting – why not bring a lovely picnic! There is no admission charge!
Please check the Society website (www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk) before setting out if there are doubts about the weather or ground conditions which may lead to cancellation of the matches.
Once again, the gentlemen of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London will be taking on the ‘Gold Bats’ of the PG Wodehouse Society in a Cricket Match held at the West Wycombe ground in Buckinghamshire on Saturday 18th June from 11.30am onwards.
Recent matches have been full of drama and excitement. You do not have to be an aficionado either of the game of cricket itself, or the somewhat arcane rules as they pertained in 1895 – under which these matches are played.
The ground at West Wycombe, in the lee of the famous hill within which run the famous Hell Fire Club tunnels, is one of the prettiest in the Home Counties.
The Society team needs your support on the day. Groups may choose to organise themselves into parties in advance, or individuals can come along separately and will be welcomed by the most solicitous of companions. Those who wish to dress in Victorian costume are most welcome to do so; this is, however, absolutely not obligatory.
No food or drink is available at the ground, so personally organised picnic lunches and teas are the order of the day. There is plenty of room along the boundary for deckchairs, rugs and picnic tables and awnings. Generous time is given for lunch and tea, with the game due to end at or near 6 pm.
For those who will be driving to the match, West Wycombe is easily reached by road on the A40 two miles west of High Wycombe. The M40 motorway passes nearby and the most scenic route is via Junction 5 then through Stokenchurch and Beacon’s Bottom on the A40. An alternative route is to exit at Junction 4 and proceed via the A4010 and the A40. A map showing the location of the ground is available on the cricket club’s website – (www.westwycombe.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp)
