The Postal Museum
May 25 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
“Obviously, the first thing to do was to see the Grimpen post-master …”
The Postal Museum 25 May @ 11:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join us for a visit to The Postal Museum at 15 – 20 Phoenix Place, WC1X 0DA, London near the Mount Pleasant sorting office in Clerkenwell. The museum has a fascinating and comprehensive collection outlining the history of the national postal service. The visit will include a ride on the recently re-opened underground Mail Ride which for 75 years was a vital artery in Britain’s communication network.
We have spaces for a maximum of 32 persons and we meet at 11am at The Postal Museum to view part of the Exhibition before walking across the road to the Mail Rail. Our rides are timed for 12.15pm and 12.35pm. It is a terrific experience! The Museum website www.postalmuseum.org gives a splendid overview of its attractions. (Please note: The Museum advises that all participants on the Mail Rail should, in the rare event of an evacuation, be able to walk 100 metres and climb 70 steps). There is a Mail Ride simulator to try in this part of the museum.
At 1pm we break for lunch and members may wish to enjoy lunch at the nearby highly recommended, traditional Union Tavern pub or at one of the nearby restaurants. We resume our visit at 2.45pm and Ms Jessica Woolf of The Postal Museum will give two presentations for members. Jessica has worked with our Society archives and her first talk will focus on “Stamps for Sherlock.” Her second talk is enticing – “Crime and Security in the Post.” Our visit will end at 5pm. The charge for this event is £18.00 per head.
If you are a postal specialist and wish to visit the Discovery Room, please advise us so that accreditation can be requested.
We are limited to 32 persons so early booking is advised. Bookings will be confirmed on a “first come, first served” basis. The Museum is a short walk from Gray’s Inn Road which is well served by buses.
