“The Old English Capital” – A Weekend in Winchester
August 31 - September 2
This year The Sherlock Holmes Society of London’s annual excursion will be to the ancient capital of England, home to Jane Austen, King Alfred and William Walker, the deep-sea diver who saved the cathedral, and the “Bloody Assizes” of Judge Jeffreys. Winchester has strong associations with Holmes and Watson being the centre for “The Problem of Thor Bridge” and “The Adventure of Copper Beeches” as well as providing the venue for the climax of “Silver Blaze”.
We shall be using The Royal Hotel, St. Peter Street, Winchester SO23 8BS as our base commencing with supper on Friday 31st August and leaving on Sunday 2nd September after lunch. The Royal Hotel was the venue when the Society last visited Winchester in 1991 for the “Tri-Metallic Question”. We will explore Winchester visiting canonical locations, travel on a steam train and visit the Military Museums. All meals will be taken at The Royal Hotel. Some bedrooms are located upstairs, although we will endeavour to provide as many ground floor rooms as possible. We have booked sufficient accommodation for 40 people and have en suite double, twin and single rooms. Early booking is strongly advised. There is very limited parking at the hotel, however, there are car parks within walking distance. Winchester is served by a very good train service from London Waterloo and by air at Southampton Airport. The latter has an easy train link to Winchester. Winchester railway station still retains much of the fascia which Holmes would have seen when he met Colonel Ross.
The cost for the weekend is £300.00 person, which includes two nights’ bed and breakfast, supper on Friday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday evening. The cost of drinks with meals is not included and you will be responsible for your own travel arrangements when arriving and departing from the Hotel.
Attendees can either pay in full on application or provide £100 deposit and pay the remainder by 30th June. Please provide an e mail address on the application form, if possible.
