Poulton Hall gardens open in aid of Merseyside Samaritans
July 3, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm£4
The gardens at the historic home of the Lancelyn Green family will be open from 1.30pm to 5.00pm on Sunday the 3rd July, to raise funds for Merseyside Samaritans.
Poulton Hall, at Bebington on the Wirral, is a bit of a distance away unless you happen to be in the northwest of England, but well worth a visit, especially as the opportunity rarely arises.
The family provided the Sherlock Holmes Society with two important and influential members. Roger Lancelyn Green (1918-1987) was a famous children's author and a member of the Inklings, alongside CS lewis and JRR Tolkien. His son Richard (1953-2004), a former Chairman of our Society, was considered by many to be the world's foremost authority on the life and work of Arthur Conan Doyle.
Besides the walled and classic gardens, the Poulton Hall gardens feature sculptures of Sherlock Holmes and Alice in Wonderland.
The Liverpool Echo notes: "You may even run into June Lancelyn Green, who at 90 years old is still a welcoming hostess to visitors of Poulton Hall."
There will be entertainment from the Wirral Girls' Grammar School Swing Band, and strawberry teas will be available.
Admission to the gardens is £4.00 for adults. There's no charge for accompanied children. Parking is free. For more information see www.poultonhall.co.uk.
