Don’t forget you may have to pay the congestion charge.
Members and their guests may opt to attend the film presentation only at £10.00, or to join us for buffet refreshments from 6.15pm in the Assembly Hall on the ground floor at a cost of £25.00 per head. There will be a cash bar. We will start the film presentation at 7.15pm.
Our host Matthew J. Elliott makes a welcome return. He is a scriptwriter well known for the US radio series “The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”. Matthew provided the adaptations of The Yellow Face and The Three Students for the Society.
This year’s film evening is entitled “Short Sharp Sherlock”, a bumper selection of films intended to give you, the discerning viewer, as much Holmes as possible. We begin with the great detective’s very very first appearance on film, Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900). In My Dear Watson (1989), the good doctor is kidnapped by the Professor Moriarty, and it’s up to Holmes and Inspector Lestrade to rescue him. Star Trek’s Mr Spock, alias Leonard Nimoy is Holmes in The Interior Motive (1976). A globe is delivered to 221b Baker Street along with a note challenging Holmes to deduce its contents without looking inside. The 1951 film The Man Who Disappeared features John Longden as Holmes, and is a loose adaptation of Conan Doyle’s The Man With the Twisted Lip. We return to the silent era for The Copper Beeches (1912) starring French actor Georges Treville. The evening concludes with a Swiss film (!), the 2010 subtitled short Sherlock Holmes’ Last Investigation.
The day after the film evening, Matthew hopes you’ll join him at the Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes Hotel on Baker Street for the launch of his new book, The Immortals: A Guide to Sherlock and Elementary. The event begins at 7pm, and admission is free. Matthew will be signing copies and conducting a Q&A session.
Applications should be sent to arrive not later than Thursday 31st October.
