A study weekend on the role of professions in the canon
September 11, 2015 - September 13, 2015
"IT'S THE OLD STORY. MORE IN YOUR BRAINS THAN IN YOUR POCKET, EH?"
A STUDY WEEKEND ON THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONS IN THE CANON
11TH – 13TH SEPTEMBER 2015
From dodgy Doctors, through baffled bankers to murdering military men, the portrayal of the professional in the Canon is somewhat checkered. Our September study weekend will address this issue.
Based at The Spa Hotel in Royal Tunbridge Wells (the nearest place of importance to Birlstone) we intend to work our way through the wide range of professions in the Canon looking at Lawyers, Teachers, Diplomats, Politicians and Clergymen plus a few more.
The Spa Hotel is situated in 14 acres of picturesque grounds on the edge of Royal Tunbridge Wells. You will have access to the Spa Health & Leisure Gymnasium, a 10m Indoor Swimming Pool and Steam Room and Saunas. Spa Treatments are available but these will have to be booked in advance and paid for separately.
Rooms will be available from about 3.00pm on the afternoon of Friday 11th September. The weekend starts with Dinner on Friday night followed by our first speaker. A full programme of speakers continues after breakfast on Saturday and again on Sunday morning. We will break up after lunch on Sunday. In recognition of the centenary of the publication of The Valley of Fear and the fact that we are close to Groombridge Place we are hoping to arrange a visit on Saturday afternoon.
There is ample car parking at the Hotel and good train links from London. Indeed Tunbridge Wells has always been well served by the Railway. But fares were expensive. When special cheap rates were proposed at a public meeting in 1881, a resident voiced his concern that it “would bring down from London the tag-rag and bobtail they so often saw in the summer time at Hastings”. Perhaps we could go to
Hastings next year!
The cost of the full weekend including accommodation and all meals is £320.00 per person. All you would have to pay for is drinks taken in the Bar or at Dinner.
The full address of the hotel is The Spa Hotel, Mount Ephraim, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN4 8XJ, UK Tel: +44 (0)1892 520331 (www.spahotel.co.uk/)
